Glyptotherium is an extinct genus of glyptodont, a group of mammals related to the armadillo. Its genus is considered an example of North American megafauna, most of which became extinct in the Quaternary extinction event. Glyptotherium probably disappeared due to overhunting. The last species of Glyptotherium became extinct approximately 12,000 years ago coinciding with the expansion of the human being.

Description[]

Like its living relative, the armadillo, Glyptotherium had a shell that covered its entire body, similar to that of a turtle. In any case, unlike the turtle's shell, Glyptotherium 's shell was made up of hundreds of small hexagons (like honeycomb). Some species grew to be three meters long and had a body weight of a ton. Glyptotherium species lived in tropical and subtropical areas of Florida, Arizona, Texas and in several states of Mexico such as Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tlaxcala, etc.
