Loricosaurus scutatus is the only known species of the dubious genus Loricosaurus (lat. “lizard with lorica”) of titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur, which lived at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 71 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian. Found in the Province of Neuquén, Argentina in the Río Colorado Formation or Allen Formation. Due to the presence of armor, it was initially thought to be an ankylosaurid, but today it is considered an armored titanosaurid. Loricosaurus' armor has caused some controversy. When Huene first described it, he considered it to be from an ankylosaur. Later, it was discovered that it did not belong to the ankylosaurs, but rather belonged to the titanosaurs. Considered a synonym of Neuquensaurus or Saltasaurus . In 1929, von Huene described Loricosaurus based on some armor osteoderms found in Argentina. The type species, Loricosaurus scutatus , is now considered possibly a synonym of Neuquensaurus.
